Born
on February 28, 1963, Claudio Chiappucci
was an accomplished rider in the Grand Tours who was known for his
constant attacks and long breakaways.
Nicknamed il Diablo, Chiappucci
burst on the scene in the 1990 when he was a member of a select group
of breakaway riders in the first road stage of the Tour
de France. The group gained ten minutes on the pack.
Chiappucci held on to his lead
through the Alps then saw it cut to two minutes after the Pyrenees.
Greg Lemond slowly bided his time, assuming that Claudio would crack.

| Lemond
took overall leadership in the penultimate stage time trial and went
on to victory without winning a single stage and having worn the yellow
jersey only on the last day of the race. |
Chiappucci
never won a Grand Tour, but he placed second in the Tour de
France in 1990 and 1992. He placed third in the 1991 race. He
also won the mountains jersey twice, in 1991 and 1992.
In
the Giro dItalia,
he placed second in 1991 and 1992, and placed third in 1993.
He won the mountains jersey three times, in 1990, 1992, and
1993. He also won the points jersey in 1991.
In
the one-day events, Chiappucci was second in the 1994 World
Championship Road Race, won the 1991 Milan-San Remo race, and
won the 1993 San Sebastian Classic.
